Evansville has opposed construction of the proposed Ambler mining road on Evansville Inc. land since 2014.
“Evansville, Inc., a private entity, holds title to approximately 70,000 acres of land in the Koyukuk River area. The land is private. It is bordered to the south by the Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge and bordered to the north by the Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. The land supports subsistence hunting and trapping. It was selected under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act for its beauty and traditional values…
On July 6, 2014, the Evansville, Inc. Board of Directors unanimously passed Resolution No. 2014-01, which opposes construction of any portion of the proposed Ambler mining road on Evansville, Inc. land. Evansville, Inc.’s position remains: no mining road across its land.
It appears the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority have not fully listened to Evansville, Inc. and other villages in the region. It also appears that AIDEA may have misled Governor Walker as to the extent of regional support for pursuing the Environmental Impact Statement. Village meetings and a Fairbanks meeting attended by village regional leaders generated little support for completing the EIS.
Evansville, Inc. has formally requested that AIDEA remove any mapped potential routes and any reference to these routes from the permit application process. Let’s see if AIDEA shows appropriate respect for private lands and grants our request.” read the full article Ambler road an affront.
