Again, really? – Letter to the editor brings up concerns about the proposed road to Ambler and the budget deficit

News-Miner letter to the editor from Anna Plager (Oct. 26, 2015) questions whether the governor’s decision to move forward on the Ambler road EIS  is fiscally responsible.

“…So, why has Gov. Bill Walker changed his mind and decided to start the Environmental Impact Statement process for the transportation megaproject across Northern Alaska to the Ambler mining district? Does he really expect Alaskans to dip into our personal pockets to help cover increased state revenues, while dribbling away millions on a project that may never come to fruition? …

Re-releasing the $3.6 million of as-yet-unspent funds on this exorbitantly expensive “wishful thinking” mining project (estimated at $430 million to simply build the road) is not putting your money where your mouth is…

To save face and allow the public to believe that our government is doing everything they can to put its fiscal house in order, this project must be mothballed again.”
